While the football on display at the 2008 FA Cup semi-finals was by no means classic, the weekend’s two games between Portsmouth and the three Championship minnows generated more than enough tension and excitement as the two finalists advanced courtesy of 1-0 victories.
In the first match of the weekend, Portsmouth outclassed a gallant Bromwich West Albion side as powerful Nigerian striker Kanu scored the only goal of the game. Sylvain Distin held the Portsmouth midfield together during the scrappy game, earning himself the man of the match award.
In the weekend’s second 2008 FA Cup semi-final, Cardiff City knocked out Championship rivals Barnsley to secure the other vacancy in the FA Cup 2008 finals. A first half strike by Joe Ledley earned Cardiff City their first appearance in the FA Cup finals in 81 years. Barnsley will be ruing poor finishing by Kayode Odejayi who missed an open strike on goal after a Barnsley pass split the Cardiff City defence.
The results from the 2008 FA Cup semi-finals mean that Portsmouth will now square off against Cardiff City in the 2007/2008 FA Cup final at Wembley on the 17th of May.
